چکیده

Acid soil is one of the most important limitations in agricultural production worldwide. Th e application of lime and the growth of Al-tolerant genotypes are the most commonly employed strategies for the amelioration of acidic soil constraints. Th is study evaluates the eff ect of soil acidity and liming on the growth and mineral nutrition of Al-tolerant potato cv. Tresor and Al-sensitive potato cv. Canberra (Solanum tuberosum L.). Liming increased the total shoot and root dry matter (DM) of cv. Canberra, and the leaf DM of cv. Tresor. ‘Tresor’ retained a greater ability to acquire nutrients from acidic soil, especially P, Ca, and Mg. In addition, the Al content in the root tips and in other vegetative parts of acidic soil-grown plants indicates, on one hand, the complexity of acidic soil toxicity that was not solely related to Al toxicity and, on the other, the possible involvement of multiple mechanisms of Al tolerance that could be partly related to better nutrient uptake from acidic soil.

Soil acidification and the importance of liming agricultural soils with particular reference to the United Kingdom

Soil acidification is caused by a number of factors including acidic precipitation and the deposition from the atmosphere of acidifying gases or particles, such as sulphur dioxide, ammonia and nitric acid. The most important causes of soil acidification on agricultural land, however, are the application of ammonium-based fertilizers and urea, elemental S fertilizer and the growth of legumes. Ac...

A Genetic Analysis of Aluminium Tolerance in Cereals

Aluminium (Al) toxicity is a major threat to agricultural production world wide wherever acid soil exists. Wheat and barley, the major food and feed crops, are severely aff ected and this necessitates investigations that could help to improve the yield by utilising the available genetic diversity for Al tolerance with the aid of several molecular platforms. We investigated the quantitative trai...

Yield Components, Vegetative Growth and Fruit Composition of ‘Istrian Malvasia’ (Vitis vinifera L.) as Aff ected by the Timing of Partial Defoliation

Th e infl uence of partial defoliation performed at diff erent grapevine growth stages on yield components, vegetative growth and fruit composition of ‘Istrian Malvasia’ (‘Malvazija istarska’) vines was investigated. During two consecutive seasons partial defoliation was performed manually at three grapevine growth stages; before bloom (BB), aft er bloom (AB), and at the beginning of bunch clos...

Farming Techniques, Environmental Challenges, and Technical Efficiency of Sweet Potato Production in Abia State, Nigeria

Viable sweet potato production is hard to achieve with indiscriminate use of farm inputs, resulting to wastage and environmental damages, as consequences are common problems of arable crop farming in Abia State. Issues arising from farm input use and their corresponding implications for environment called for a study on suitable farming practices and farm-specific technical efficiency for optim...
